SVP-Bircher advocates a ban on evictions

The case caused a shake of the head throughout Switzerland: 49 tenants in the municipality of Windisch in Aargau were terminated because a private investor wanted to demolish their apartments for new construction. Before the start of construction, however, new asylum seekers must move in instead of the previous residents.

SVP chairman Marco Chiesa (48) spoke of a “scandal”. SP asylum minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59) criticized the “cacophony” between the responsible authorities. The responsible SVP government councilor Jean-Pierre Gallati (56) had to admit mistakes and apologize. Some of the tenants receive an extension of the term and compensation, but eventually have to leave – some of the residents resist the termination.

The Windisch case also reverberates in federal Bern. “Such a case should not be repeated,” says SVP Landsraadmember Martina Bircher (39) to Blick. In the special session, she therefore filed a motion asking the Federal Council to take appropriate action.

Prohibit evictions

Cancellation of the apartment should therefore no longer be legal in the future, “if this cancellation only serves to accommodate asylum seekers or people temporarily admitted”. Bircher expressly demands that “the temporary use of rental apartments as asylum residence, which leads to the termination of rental contracts, is also prohibited”.

The national councilor of Aargau considers her initiative particularly necessary for two reasons. On the one hand, the housing shortage in Switzerland is getting worse, on the other hand, the migration situation is getting worse, Bircher complains.

In fact, the federal government expects some 27,000 new asylum applications this year – slightly more than last year. “Unfair dismissals such as in Windisch could increase as a result,” the SVP woman fears. “To protect these tenants, who have to make do with smaller rental budgets, it is important to prohibit such evictions.”

Baume-Schneider plans container villages

Asylum minister Baume-Schneider also wants to provide relief in the area of ​​housing: she wants to provide additional asylum accommodation for CHF 133 million, especially in container villages.

An idea that Bircher doesn’t believe in. “We don’t need to expand the asylum infrastructure,” she explains, “but we are tackling the root problem by reducing the number of migrants entering the country.”
