Therefore, part-time work is a win

According to the head of the Seco labor market, the state should no longer regulate working hours – the labor market works well. According to Boris Zürcher, part-time work is a profit and not a driver for the shortage of skilled workers. (archive image)

“Thanks to part-time work, we have more women on the labor market. Otherwise we wouldn’t have them,” said the head of the Labor Directorate of the State Secretariat of Economic Affairs (Seco) in an interview published on Thursday with the Tamedia newspapers. “We can be happy for everyone who participates in the labor market at all, even if is this part-time. The alternative is that it doesn’t work. You have to keep reminding yourself of that.”

According to Zürcher, part-time work has always been promoted as a means of improving the combination of work and family life. Especially for women. “Thanks to part-time work, they can do both. Now they are accused of being work shy. Incidentally, also for men who no longer want to work 100 percent. Ultimately, it is about the division of the work volume in the household.”

Of course, work pays off, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many people on the labor market. The volume of work in Switzerland is growing every year and more people are employed in general. “But because employment is constantly increasing, it is spread out to more and more people, and therefore there is a tendency to work less per capita,” calculated Zürcher.

In view of full employment, Zürcher also finds the criticism that education is ignoring the labor market unfounded. “Apparently we’re producing people at the much-reviled universities that are in high demand in the job market.” Academics, in particular, are significantly less unemployed in comparison, working more and longer – well past retirement age. The higher incomes led to more tax revenues.
