The Chinese embassy in Bern is angry.

China is angry. The Swiss National Council on Tuesday decided to expand the Council’s relations with the Taiwanese parliament. The small, democratically governed country must defend itself against the big China. As part of the “One China Policy,” China considers Taiwan part of their country.

The Chinese embassy in Bern reacted accordingly. “Some Swiss parliamentarians have made irresponsible statements.” The Council allegedly “interfered grossly” in China’s internal affairs.

The one China policy is a consensus of the international community, the embassy said. In fact, Switzerland maintains cultural, scientific and economic contacts, but no official relations.

improve relationships

The National Council wants to improve relations with the Taiwanese parliament. “This exchange is intended to help strengthen economic, political, scientific and cultural relations between Switzerland and Taiwan,” said SP national councilor Fabian Molina (32).

It is not the first time that Swiss parliamentarians have caused a stir. In February 2023, five parliamentarians traveled to Taiwan.

China is now calling on the National Council to “not send the wrong signals” and to “hold on to the hard-won successes of Sino-Swiss cooperation”.

One thing is clear: foreign policy is a matter for the federal government – the National Council can do little here. The Chinese embassy knows that too. (brother/she)
