As a member of the UN Security Council, Switzerland has achieved successes in the first few months, said Ambassador Pascale Baeriswyl. (archive image)

Millions of people depend on humanitarian aid in this region, Baeriswyl said in an interview with Tamedia newspapers on Saturday.

“We have also extended the mandate of the UN office in the Sahel to help organize elections there,” the ambassador continued. In addition, it has become possible to integrate climate issues into peacekeeping mandates, for example in South Sudan.

Nevertheless, global crises and conflicts would increase. “It is therefore important that a country like Switzerland is represented in the Council to give a strong voice to international law, humanitarian law and the rule of law,” said the head of the Swiss UN mission. Switzerland is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for two years.

Switzerland will have a stronger voice in the highest UN body next month. Then she takes over the presidency of the Security Council. “The presidency is primarily a protocol, administrative position,” Baeriswyl said. Switzerland wants to focus on the protection of the civilian population. (SDA)
