Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis (left) welcomed the Swiss ambassador to Sudan, Christian Winter, in Bern on Tuesday.

When asked, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) said it was aware of another 25 persons with a connection to Switzerland who wanted to leave the country.

According to the FDFA, the people left the East African country, which was in the middle of an armed conflict, with transports organized by various third countries such as France, Germany or the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The FDFA supports Swiss citizens in Sudan on the basis of the Swiss Abroad Act and within the scope of its capabilities, it said when asked.

Simplified procedure

During the first evacuation flights, the double citizens had a hard time upon arrival at the air force base or when boarding at the airport in the Sudanese capital Khartoum, a spokesperson for the FDFA reported on Thursday.

The FDFA chapters, together with various partners and third countries, have committed to simplifying the procedures regarding dual nationality. Once specific flight options from third countries are confirmed, the FDFA will actively inform registrants, it said. Those wishing to leave the country will then receive a “laisser passer” certificate from the FDFA.
