Authorities and intelligence services checked significantly more in 2022

The increase in surveillance measures was mainly due to the sharp increase in aerial searches, according to the message from the ÜPF service on Friday. These have almost doubled. The number of real-time monitoring rose to 1218. Last year there were still 1055. There was also an increase in supervision measures afterwards.

One third of these measures were ordered to investigate property crimes, the ÜPF service said. A quarter of the measures were carried out to identify serious violations of the Narcotics Act and almost nine percent for emergency investigations.

About five percent of the measures were taken because of crimes against life and limb and crimes against freedom. The latter has increased by almost 70 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year. The other measures were divided between house searches and other forms of crime.

At CHF 31.7 million, the total costs of the public transport service in 2022 were slightly lower than in the previous year. That was then 31.9 million francs, as it was called. The criminal prosecution authorities can, on the basis of the Code of Criminal Procedure, order measures to monitor postal and telecommunications traffic in order to detect serious crimes. The FIS can do that too, based on the Intelligence Service Act.

Any supervision order issued by a public prosecutor must be reviewed by the relevant judicial licensing authority. Before implementing any measure, the FIS obtains the approval of Federal Councilor Viola Amherd, head of the Federal Ministry of Defence, Civil Protection and Sports (DDPS).
