The Swiss ambassador Christian Winter (64) and his staff escaped the fighting in Sudan: they landed in Bern on Tuesday morning. But several dozen Swiss are still trapped in the civil war country. Partly because they are not allowed to leave the country: dual nationality requires an exit permit from the Sudanese government – which currently does not exist.
As the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) reports on request, dual nationals end up at the place of departure either when boarding the transport flight or on their way to the air base. According to EDA information, this applies to all dual citizens with a Sudanese passport.
According to Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis (62), there are currently no diplomatic contacts at the level of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. However, the FDFA is “in close contact with the various partners and third countries to facilitate the process as much as possible,” said a spokesman. In addition, they remain in constant contact with all Swiss in Sudan “to inform them about the options available to leave the country”.
Meanwhile, the FDFA confirmed on Tuesday evening that four Swiss nationals were able to leave Sudan on Monday via flights organized by Germans and Dutch. These were initially brought to Germany and the Netherlands.
Efforts to support Swiss nationals who have expressed a wish to leave Sudan continue, the FDFA said. The German Foreign Ministry had previously announced the evacuation of the Swiss on Twitter.
