The Swiss ambassador in Berlin, Paul René Seger, was surprised by the criticism of Switzerland. (archive image)

Paul René Seger (58), Swiss ambassador in Berlin, referred to the principle of neutrality, which is central in Switzerland: “It is in our DNA”, he said in the Monday edition of the German newspaper “Augsburger Allgemeine”. “That also means we don’t support wars.” It is comparable to the passage on the reunification requirement in the German constitution.

Seger was amazed at the “scale of the criticism that falls on us”. “The impression is given that Switzerland is partly to blame if Putin wins the war. But 12,000 shots will not affect or even decide the war,” he said.

Germany wants to export Swiss ammunition for the Gepard anti-aircraft tank to Ukraine. However, Switzerland must agree to pass on the ammunition, because Germany committed itself by the order not to pass it on to belligerents. The German federal government has already delivered 34 Gepard tanks to Ukraine, but with 60,000 rounds short of ammunition.

Federal President Alain Berset (51) also reaffirmed his strict no to passing on ammunition during his visit to Berlin last week. “You cannot demand that we break our own laws,” Berset said after a meeting with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (64, SPD). Swiss neutrality laws meant that the government could not provide military support to either side in a conflict. (SDA)
