Switzerland has frozen 7.5 billion Swiss francs in oligarch funds. Scott Miller (43), ambassador of the US in Bern, thinks that is far too little. The American has been pressuring for weeks: Switzerland must block at least 50, if not 100 billion.
At the beginning of April, Miller gathered his colleagues from the G7 countries around him: the ambassadors of France, Italy, Germany, Canada, Japan, Great Britain and the US wrote a letter to Federal President Alain Berset (51). Your demand: Switzerland should finally join the multinational task force Repo.
Hardly anyone in this country expected the Bundesrat to respond to the letter by immediately joining this working group. That is indeed not up for discussion, said the economic service (EAER) of Guy Parmelin (63) a little later.
Yet there was a blow to the SVP Federal Council. “Guy Parmelin made the explosive decision on his own,” headlined CH Media on Monday – now causing red heads in the WBF. According to the department, Parmelin has not decided anything. The Federal Chancellery had instructed him to inform the G7 ambassadors of the official position of Switzerland, which they had previously represented.
Actually not Parmelin, but Seco boss Helene Budliger (58) answered the ambassadors. Where “answer” is already overstated, the department reports: Budliger only informed the ambassadors. In general, it is absolutely unusual for ambassadors to make such demands.
The capitals are responsible for the task force – and there is no criticism from them. The task force was not an issue at the most recent meeting of federal councilors with G7 ministers. The meeting of State Secretary Budliger with Miller and US Secretary of State Brian Nelson (43) also seems to have taken place in Minne. Nelson is said to have even said, “This is not my letter.”
The squabbles over who decides what when dealing with oligarch funds and whether they do at all are significant: No one is taking responsibility – especially in the context of a Federal Council meeting. The government apparently fears the political consequences. It is better to pass the hot potato down. “The Federal Council has not yet made a decision on the repo task force,” spokesman André Simonazzi told Sunday’s View.
Apparently the government just wants to endure the pressure from abroad. However, it would be inadvisable to rely on only a few crass ambassadors behind it. For they have by no means acted on their own initiative. The US Embassy tells SonntagsBlick, “We always coordinate with Washington.” Another involved embassy confirmed that the letter to the Federal Council had been coordinated with all G7 governments.
