“I don’t understand why people laughed so hard”

On the weekend before the traditional Sechseläuten, a select group of Zurich’s elite gather at the Terrasse am Bellevue restaurant for the “Ball bei Böögg”. An exclusive opportunity for an even more exclusive audience. However, this year there was a scandal: the “Tages-Anzeiger” published a video showing a questionable portrait of this society.

Part of the program: Blackfacing. So a white man with a face painted black, a raffia skirt, a curly wig and a large bone in his hand, which is repeatedly clamped between his legs.

New dimension of racism

“That was too much for me,” says the man responsible for light and sound at the event, in an interview with the “Tages-Anzeiger”. He even briefly considered turning down the light and sound controls. However, he decided against it, instead filming the scene with his mobile phone.

This racism was a new dimension for him, he continues. As a DJ who plays full-time at events, he has been confronted with racist statements more often than before in recent months.

The evening on the terrace was one experience too many for him. Moreover, one he had never experienced to such an extent. He told the “Tages-Anzeiger”: “The case violates the criminal law standard against racism. I can’t understand why everyone was laughing so hard at these clearly racist skits.”

Speak for the oppressed

With the video and the disclosure, he wanted to speak for anyone whose voices were suppressed. The man also counts the numerous foreign service specialists who would have worked on the terrace on Saturday evening.

The Federal Commission against Racism also condemned the performance at the “Ball bei Böögg” in the newspapers of CH Media. It is tasteless and reproduces racist stereotypes.

However, neither the Zurich city police nor the public prosecutor’s office have received any reports related to the “Ball bei Böögg” event. (Okay)
