More grain and more edible oils and fats should now be stored. In the case of grain, the Bundesrat wants to increase compulsory stocks by about 50 percent, it wrote at the opening of the consultations on Wednesday. For edible oils and fats, the increase is around 25 percent.

Mandatory stocks of protein carriers used as feed are reduced. The increased storage capacity would cost about CHF 17 million annually. In addition, there are one-off costs of 84 million francs for the expansion of mandatory stocks.

The current rule is that Switzerland must be fully supplied from mandatory stocks for three to four months in the event of a serious shortage. The purpose of the expansion is to secure supplies from mandatory stocks and domestic production for up to one year.
