Center parties have drifted to the left

The GLP in particular has started the march to the left. In doing so, she was the strongest member of the people’s movement.

The Swiss population has become more left – and with it the Green Liberals, the Center Party and the FDP. Groenen, SP and SVP, on the other hand, have not significantly changed their position. At least that is apparent from a study by the Sotomo research institute, the SRF Tagesschau reports.

An analysis of party slogans on votes over the past twelve years shows that citizens have more confidence in government solutions, says Sotomo director Michael Hermann (51). At the same time, skepticism about the self-organization of the economy has increased.

Parties went along

The GLP and the Mitte party were particularly involved in this movement. According to Sotomo, the FDP has also moved slightly to the political center. Because the parties worked together with their electorate, the SP could hardly benefit from this.

Center party chairman Gerhard Pfister (60) does not want to speak of a left-wing slide in the SRF contribution, but only of a slide to the centre. According to Pfister, the solutions supported by the center are also capable of winning a majority among the people. “And if people move more towards social movements or social policies, then of course we will too.”

Migration helps the SVP

More recently, however, it was the SVP that managed to gain ground in elections in cantons such as Geneva and Zurich. Michael Hermann explains this with the issue of migration, which is more of a conservative versus progressive issue. Because the SVP is more conservative than all other parties, it currently benefits from its unique selling point.

In the parliamentary elections on 22 October 2023, the People’s Party could score points thanks to the migration issue – provided that the number of asylum seekers has not fallen or there is a completely different subject on the political agenda. For example, an extremely hot summer can bring the climate issue back into focus, which is more favorable for the eco-parties. (pt)
