The number of asylum applications increased in March

The main countries of origin of the newly registered asylum seekers were Turkey, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Morocco and Algeria, the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) announced on Tuesday. The figures do not include refugees living in Switzerland with protection status S due to the war in Ukraine.

Of the new applications, 1,429 were so-called primary applications. They have been submitted by people who have no connection with people who have previously sought protection in Switzerland. Secondary applications are, for example, submitted after the birth of an asylum seeker or family reunification, or there are several applications.

In March, 2,307 asylum applications were processed in the first instance. 552 people were granted asylum and 690 were provisionally admitted. 662 was not acted upon, in most cases due to the Dublin Convention. In the first instance, 11,972 applications were pending, 331 fewer than in February 2023.

1,531 people left Switzerland in March or were sent back to their country of origin or to a third country. Switzerland asked a Dublin country to take over 957 people, and 200 people were transferred to a Dublin country. Other Dublin countries asked Switzerland to take over 487 people and 65 people came to Switzerland from a Dublin country.

At the end of March, 65,756 refugees from Ukraine with protection status S were living in Switzerland. In March, 2,215 people were granted status S. 50 individuals received a negative decision because they did not meet the criteria for status S. Status S has been terminated in 10,507 cases to date.
