“They can’t get away from behind or from the front”

At the turn of the year, the outgoing Ueli Maurer handed over the finance department to Karin Keller-Sutter.

Has the former finance minister done too little to save Credit Suisse? Former SVP federal councilor Ueli Maurer (72) has heard a lot in recent days and weeks. Despite many scandals and alarm signals, the Zurich resident seemed to fight back against stricter rules for the banking center for years. Laisser-faire liberalism even raised eyebrows in the Bundesrat – until CS could only be saved by a takeover by UBS.

But Maurer wants nothing to do with the criticism. Nothing. “All those who have made these criticisms simply have no idea how banking works. Otherwise you wouldn’t ask such stupid questions and express such criticism,” he complained on Monday evening on the regional broadcaster Tele Züri during the live broadcast of the Sechseläuten.

“Maybe that could have been corrected”

“It is a pity that CS has come up with this. That might have been corrected, but it started years ago,” he admits. However, he leaves open why he has not tightened the reins of the CS management. He’d had plenty of chances for that.

He does not claim that he made mistakes. “Certainly not, no,” he says. But he dismisses the main culprit within the government: “I was closely involved and had other ideas, but as you know, majorities are always needed.” How he had wanted to prevent the crash of the CS – and who in turn prevented him from doing so, he also leaves open.

He followed with great interest the last few days with a last-minute rescue of the large bank. And for once, Maurer seemed to have missed his old job at the Bundesrat. “When something like this happens, you want to be there yourself, so that you have a say in the decision-making process,” he explains to “Tele Zuri”. “But actually I don’t miss my time as a federal councilor. I enjoy the other life.” (dba)
