Trolls won’t get you very far

With the no they wanted to send a signal: SP and Greens rebelled against the Federal Council’s CS rescue plan.

Parliament cannot say no at all – and yet it does. The special CS session of the National Council and the Council of States was a strange event. Because it was clear from the start that parliament could no longer reverse the Bundesrat’s emergency decision to save CS.

Parliament saw this as a free passage and over the past two days has transformed the Federal Palace into an arena for election campaigns. Instead of being ready for compromise, the left and the SVP were stubborn and went to win voters with pithy votes.

When nothing is at stake, it’s easy to be rude. Trolls won’t get you any further, though. It is understandable that Parliament wanted to vent its anger – the people’s representatives were close to the people. But to really avoid another banking debacle, politics is needed instead of polemic.

Election campaigns are made with maximum demands. Politics requires a willingness to compromise – even in an election year.
