After the French daily “Le Monde”, the leading American medium “Washington Post” is now also criticizing Swiss neutrality. “The war in Ukraine has led to a radical shift in European neutrality,” headlined the Washington Post in its April 7 editorial.
What message is conveyed by maintaining neutrality in the face of an illegal invasion of a sovereign country? “While hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost and millions of refugees have fled across the continent, the few remaining European countries that refuse to take sides seem morally dull to many of their allies and neighbours, and even many of their own citizens. obstructive and arrogant.”
It continues: “The refusal to acknowledge Russia’s attack on international standards is rightly seen as a denial of reality.”
The Washington Post’s broadside against Swiss neutrality shows that the US Congress and the White House are closely following the local debate over ammunition re-exports to Ukraine or Christoph Blocher’s (82) commitment to a neutrality initiative.
Faced with the war in Europe, one should take sides, writes the Washington Post: “This has already become clear to many in Switzerland, where the deep emotional attachment to neutrality, which citizens have long regarded as a hallowed mark of national life, considered is increasingly questioned.”
The geopolitical controversy over neutrality cannot be separated from Switzerland’s economic and financial situation, according to the “Post”. “Even some of the most reputable Swiss banks, which are an important pillar of the Swiss economy, have endorsed Swiss policy changes, including support for Western sanctions.” And this despite the fact that they miss out on sales as a result.
In addition to Switzerland, Austria and Ireland are also neutral in Europe. Neutrality has also begun to waver in these countries recently, according to the American newspaper. “Perhaps the most telling sign of growing unease with official neutrality is that the Swiss, Austrians and even the Irish – who are militarily but not politically neutral in the war in Ukraine – have announced drastic increases in defense spending. This suggests that in today’s Europe being neutral no longer means you have nothing to fear.”
