Micarna employees slaughter and cut more than 30 million chickens each year. There will be many more in the future. Subsidiary Migros wants to open a new branch in St-Aubin FR, just over ten kilometers from the existing slaughterhouse in Courtepin FR as the crow flies. Where there is now a pasture, it must soon be possible to process 40 million chickens per year.
Migros speaks of an “ingenious project”. Greenpeace, on the other hand, issued a “no-go”. The nature conservation organization strongly criticizes Migros’ plans and is trying to prevent construction with all available means. “It cannot be the case that such a project is realized in the 21st century,” says Alexandra Gavilano of Greenpeace. Excessive meat consumption harms the environment and accelerates the climate crisis, so one argument. In addition, the new slaughterhouse will lead to an enormous increase in water consumption in the region, more traffic and a reduction in the quality of life of the residents.
Greenpeace has therefore objected to the change in spatial planning. The organization reserves the right to take further legal action. She also supports the local resistance against the new slaughterhouse. A local environmental organization had submitted a petition with 3,600 signatures to the Freiburg government last November asking it not to approve the construction.
If your own objection fails, you will appeal to the mobilized population against the building permit for the slaughterhouse, Gavilano announces.
Migros does not want to respond directly to Greenpeace’s criticism. “Everyone can give their opinion on Micarna’s projects and our teams, in collaboration with the cantonal authorities, have listened to the concerns of the population in the region,” said Migros spokesperson Tristan Cerf. The original plan was for the new slaughterhouse to be put into operation next year. Migros does not answer the question of whether this is still realistic.
The retailer wants to build the new slaughterhouse because the demand for chicken has been increasing for years – and this is expected to continue in the coming years. On average, every inhabitant of Switzerland eats about twelve kilos of chicken per year.
“We have to meet this demand. Otherwise we will have to import even more,” says Cerf. He emphasizes that the new slaughterhouse has the highest social, economic and environmental requirements. For example, you want a CO2build a neutral company and thus create jobs in the region. (lha)
