SP politician Marina Carobbio (in the red blazer) is happy with her election victory.

With the election of alderman Marina Carobbio (56) in the government of Ticino, the SP was able to defend its seat on Sunday. However, the left-green camp has lost about four percent of voter share compared to 2019.

The four previous government council members have become eligible for re-election without any problems. Carobbio told RSI she was happy about joining the government. When asked about the final result of the SP and Green list, Carobbio said that the number of voters had not met her expectations, but that the numbers would have to be analyzed in the coming days.

No more all-male government

The four previous members, Norman Gobbi (Lega), Claudio Zali (Lega), Christian Vitta (FDP) and Raffaele De Rosa (center), were confirmed as government councilors on Sunday. With Marina Carobbio, another woman enters the government of Ticino. The Ticino manager has been a male body since Laura Sadis (FDP) stepped down in 2015.

Ticino is the last Swiss canton to elect its government through proportional representation. According to information from the Ticino State Chancellery, the list of Lega and SVP (27.6 percent) received the most votes on Sunday, followed by the FDP (22.94 percent) and the center (18.3 percent). The list combination of SP and Groenen received 17.0 percent of the vote.

In addition to Linksgrün, the FDP has also lost voter shares. The list combination of SP and Greens lost more than four percentage points in votes compared to 2019, the FDP 1.7 percent. Lega and SVP also lost slightly (minus 0.4 percent). The center could grow slightly. Turnout was 55.99 percent.

gap in the Council of States

It is still unclear whether Ticino will hold a by-election for the vacant Council of States seat in the coming months or whether Carobbio’s seat on the Council of States will remain vacant until the national elections in the fall.

Carobbio, 56, a doctor by profession, was elected to the Stöckli in 2019 in place of long-standing CVP member Filippo Lombardi by a 46-vote lead. She is, among other things, a member of the Commission for Social Security and Health and a member of the European Committee for Women from Italian-speaking Switzerland.

The Great Council of Ticino is not counted until Monday. The result is expected by 5 p.m. (SDA)
