The sociologist Ganga Jey Aratnam (50) sees the Swiss as lagging behind on the labor market. The reason: Swiss job titles are not keeping pace with international titles, as he said in the “SonntagsZeitung”. “Often our highly trained specialists are equated with less well-educated foreigners because they have the same or even better title.”
It is difficult when people who grew up here feel disadvantaged compared to newcomers. “Switzerland is not doing enough to counter this.”
The sociologist sees the solution in a higher percentage of secondary school students – also because you need a diploma for more and more jobs. That does not mean that the apprenticeship is weakened – if more people start an apprenticeship at the same time. “Nearly 13 percent of working-age adults lack vocational training.”
It is not the first time that the Basel sociologist, who emigrated from Sri Lanka to Switzerland 28 years ago, has made sharp statements. A few years ago he called in the “SonntagsZeitung” for integration courses for Swiss people, similar to those for immigrants. (brother/SDA)
