Can Pierre Maudet make the comeback?

Pierre Maudet is trying to make a comeback again.

Elections will be held in three cantons on Sunday: voters have been called to the polls in Lucerne, Geneva and Ticino. At the center are the women and an old acquaintance.

Lucerne

After the elections, Lucerne’s governing council, which has been made up of five middle-class men for eight years, is likely to include two women and one other party in addition to the Mitte, FDP and SVP. Three of the five government council members resign. Because only one man and several women have real electoral chances among the new candidates, the new government will no longer consist entirely of men.

Armin Hartmann has to defend the vacant seat of the SVP, Michaela Tschuor that of the center. Ylfete Fanaj (SP), Christa Wenger (Greens) and Claudia Huser (GLP) compete for the third vacant seat, that of Marcel Schwerzmann, an impartial bourgeoisie. The two previous ones, Reto Wyss (center) and Fabian Peter (FDP), should be eligible for re-election without any problems.

870 people are candidates for the 120 seats on the Lucerne Cantonal Council. More than a quarter of the seats, namely 34, are now in the middle. The FDP and SVP each hold 22 mandates. The SP has 19 seats, the Greens 15 and the GLP 8.

Geneva

Voters in Geneva will also elect a new government and a new parliament on Sunday. 23 candidates are competing for the seven government seats. The bourgeoisie has set itself the goal of breaking the red-green majority in the Council of State. However, they could not agree on an alliance.

Greens and SP, on the other hand, run with a joint list to defend their four seats. Former State Councilor Pierre Maudet is trying to make a comeback with his new party.

After an affair about a luxury trip to Abu Dhabi in 2015, which the royal family had financed there, Maudet resigned from the Council of State at the end of October 2020 after a long wrangling.

In the mid-term elections, he ran as an independent candidate for his own successor. The Genevan FDP had previously excluded him from the party. Maudet achieved a remarkable success in the March 2021 elections, but was clearly defeated by the Green Fabienne Fischer, trailing by 9,000 votes.

A record number of 691 candidates on twelve lists are applying for the 100 seats in the currently bourgeois-dominated cantonal parliament in Geneva. At the electoral threshold of 7 percent, several parties could fail. The FDP, the SP and the Greens need not worry about their place in the Grand Council. On the other hand, the representation of the left, center, MCG and SVP is on shaky feet.

Tessin

The parliament and government are also re-elected in Ticino. After the elections, the Board of Directors, which has been made up of five men for eight years, is likely to include another woman, most likely Marina Carobbio (SP). The State Council is a candidate for the vacant seat of the only outgoing member of the government council, Manuele Bertoli (SP).

Since Ticino chooses not only his parliament, but also the government in the system of proportional representation, the SP and the Greens have jointly drawn up a list of five candidates to succeed Bertoli. Center candidate Raffaele De Rosa and FDP government councilor Christian Vitta should be re-elected without any problems, according to the prognosis. Likewise the two Lega representatives Norman Gobbi and Claudio Zali.

In parliament, the numerous small parties in particular are likely to increase. The new parties “HelvEthica Ticino”, “MontagnaViva” and “Dignità ai Pensionati” want to enter the Ticino Parliament. So is the new party “Avanti con Ticino & Lavoro”, led by former SP politician and economist Amalia Mirante. The Green Liberals – not yet represented in the Grand Council of Ticino – are again fighting for parliamentary admission after 2015 and 2019, sending 39 candidates to the race.
