Also present were Federal President Alain Berset, Hereditary Prince Alois von und zu Liechtenstein and Prime Minister Daniel Risch. The neighboring cantons of St. Gallen and Graubünden were also represented by members of the government.
“Tonight we commemorate a long shared history with Liechtenstein,” Berset told the media at the beginning of the evening. A friendship and connection has developed between the countries, which is of great importance to Switzerland. “In these turbulent times it is very important to have stable relationships,” said the Federal President.
Hereditary Prince Alois von und zu Liechtenstein explained that on the anniversary day he was especially grateful to Switzerland for concluding the customs treaty in 1923. “Who knows if Liechtenstein would still exist as an independent state,” said the heiress, referring to the economic hardship after the First World War. The most important achievement of the Customs Treaty for Liechtenstein is therefore its independence as a state.
