Free ski passes worth CHF 550 for local politicians and officials. Bergbahnen Arosa already made headlines almost two years ago. Now it is clear: those responsible for the mountain railways must go to court, the SRF reports.
The Graubünden public prosecutor’s office has investigated the allegations and has now filed a complaint against the general manager and the chairman of the board of directors.
The legal question that arises is that of granting an advantage. In concrete terms: is a donation of this value already an attempt to influence or just generosity?
Bruno Ulmi Stuppani, spokesman for the Graubünden public prosecutor’s office, told SRF: “Such gifts may constitute illegal influence attempts.”
The public prosecutor must now clarify whether the ski tickets given away constitute such an influence or not. The criminal complaint is only filed during the court hearing – the presumption of innocence applies to both suspects.
The public prosecutor also investigates misconduct on the part of the other party. In other words, have the recipients committed a crime by accepting the ski passes or not? The charge here is abuse.
The Arosa case also led to major discussions in the canton of Valais. In the past, several mountain railways have also given (almost) free ski passes to politicians. (sq)
