According to ETH researchers, two “Mohr” inscriptions were added in Zurich only in the 20th century. The city of Zurich wants to hide the inscriptions because they are racist. Homeland Security is fighting it in court.
The inscriptions were created in the 20th century in a process that could be described as the “invention of the ancient city,” as the researchers wrote in their report published Tuesday. They would say more about the wishes of the client than about the past.
The term “Mohr,” consistently referred to as the M word in the report, has always been derogatory, it is said. The researchers write that the inscriptions should be seen in the context of “colonial amnesia”.
The city of Zurich commissioned the investigation. Zurich argues with Homeland Security over the inscriptions. The building’s appeals court had recently rejected the coverage. The city wants to take the case to the administrative court. The ETH report should help her do that. (SDA/sq)
