In a letter on Friday, the Swiss Working Group on Mountain Regions (SAB) asked members of the National Council Security Policy Committee (SIK-N) to reconsider their decision to suspend the file. The committee will meet for the next time early next week.
Numerous variants have been investigated for evacuating the ammunition depot, the SAB writes. No new findings are to be expected from a renewed study of variants.
The encapsulation of the ammunition supply mentioned in the discussions does not solve the problem in the least. In effect, you are creating “a ticking time bomb”. Subsequent explosion risks or a risk to the environment cannot be ruled out.
SIK-N had recently suspended advising the company for up to a year. The narrow majority felt that the variants of the evacuation had not been sufficiently investigated.
Due to the suspension, the federal government can no longer buy houses and thus enable the residents to build a new life elsewhere. This creates insecurity and resentment in the village.
In December 1947, large explosions occurred in the ammunition depot of the Swiss army in Mitholz. Several hundred tons of explosives remained in the rubble. The Bundesrat wants to clear the former ammunition depot. In his message to parliament, he asked CHF 2.59 billion for the work. (SDA)
