“Sun clear: we have to stop that!”

Co-SP chairman Cédric Wermuth wants to stop sales to China.

The planned sale of the Valais drinking water source “Mühlackern” in the Federal Palace is now a problem. The water rights of the well in the village of Turtmann VS will be sold to China, Blick announced. To prevent this, SP co-leader Cédric Wermuth (37) submitted a proposal shortly before the end of the session in the National Council.

“It’s absurd,” he explains, “we’re discussing how to reduce our dependence on foreign energy for energy while selling a source of drinking water to China,” he enthuses.

“We Have to Stop This”

That is why Wermuth demands that the Bundesrat clarify how many Swiss drinking water sources have already been bought by foreign companies. But he especially wants to know how the sale of our drinking water abroad can be prevented. “It’s crystal clear: we have to stop this.”

The parliamentarian also drew attention to an initiative by his fellow party member Jacqueline Badran (61), who called for the subordination of the energy and water infrastructure to the Lex Koller. This is intended to make it impossible to sell such systems abroad. Badran herself also emphasized on Twitter how important her parliamentary initiative is in view of the proposed sale. At the end of March, the initiative will be discussed in the Environment Committee of the National Council.

“It is clear”, party leader Wermuth explains, “in view of the growing water shortage, access to drinking water is becoming increasingly important. It is therefore imperative that strategic infrastructures such as drinking water sources remain under domestic control.”

Chinese pay better

The municipality of Turtmann-Unterems has in the past repeatedly suffered from severe drought during the summer months. The greater is the dissatisfaction in the village about the plans with the Chinese investors, which the community has confirmed to Blick.

Research by Blick shows that the source is also interested in Germany. But of course it is more lucrative to market the spring water that flows through the Matterhorn in the Middle Kingdom. Although the local mineral water market is considered saturated, there are great sales opportunities in China for Swiss water with the most famous Swiss mountain on the label.

There are now fears of water shortages again, not only in Valais after the winter with little precipitation.
