Until the year 2040, up to four hours of traffic jams per day are threatening on the A1: according to a report from the Federal Council about the expansion of national roads, published at the end of February.

That is why the SVP is now walking on a lead on this subject. Bernese National Councilor Erich Hess (41) calls on the Federal Council to expand the A1 between Bern and Zurich and between Lausanne and Geneva to “at least six lanes”.

More highway lanes through immigration

The rationale for Hess’s demand: “massive and uncontrolled immigration”. As a result, the traffic on this important axis is now much greater than before.

The A1 is already one of the chronically congested routes in the country. This is proven by the daily traffic jam reports between the Baregg tunnel and Zurich, between Kirchberg BE and Bern or at Lausanne VD.

Expansion projects planned

At 410 kilometres, the A1 is Switzerland’s longest motorway. It connects the cities of Geneva, Bern, Zurich and St. Gallen on the east-west axis. Truck driver Hess fears that this important traffic axis will be used even more in the near future. It is therefore appropriate that the Bundesrat enforce the general expansion of the A1 to six lanes.

By 2030, expansion projects worth around CHF 11.6 billion on the national road network must be tackled. At the end of February, he forwarded the relevant message to Parliament. This should improve traffic flow on the national roads. (Okay)
