solar rocket! Wind energy offensive! Hydropower Express! When it comes to future energy policy, Parliament is stepping on the gas. The power supply must be expanded as soon as possible. Also with alpine solar power plants, higher reservoir walls or industrial wind power plants.
In the current parliamentary debate on the so-called energy mantle decree, further cuts in nature management in favor of electricity production are on the agenda.
Environmental activist Vera Weber is outraged by this energy policy: “What is happening here is a hasty and ill-considered flight forward,” says the president of the Fondation Franz Weber to Blick. «Our nature and landscape are sacrificed on the altar of energy supply. It is a frontal attack on our Alps.”
With a view to the planned solar offensive, the environmental activist says: “In the future, the Alpenfirn sung about in the national anthem should no longer turn red, but should drown in the sea of rays from the solar panels.” No wonder then that Weber is also campaigning against the solar power plant in Grengiols that is being promoted in the canton of Valais. “We stand with the local population, who oppose this mega project.”
But don’t the landscape protection associations and their opposition pursue a preventive policy? “No, if climate protection is at the expense of nature, then that is a complete contradiction that we have to fight against,” she says firmly. Especially in small-scale Switzerland, one has to be careful with nature.
“We have nothing against renewables, but they should be used wisely – without spoiling the landscape and destroying biodiversity,” Weber emphasises. For solar energy, for example, there is still a lot of untapped potential in existing and new buildings. Other alternative energies and technologies should also play a role.
However, Weber has little interest in the nuclear energy debate that has flared up again. “I am a child of nuclear power no-thank-time.” Instead, she emphasizes another point: “We also need to save on electricity. We need to focus more on that.”
This Saturday, Vera Weber will also present her position in Meyrin GE for the SVP delegates. An invitation that she likes to use as an advocate of nature. The title of her presentation is “Natural deformation by solar and wind farms”. “Especially on the SVP base, there are also many nature-loving people,” emphasizes Weber.
On the same day, the SVP will officially vote no to the climate target bill, which voters will decide on June 18. Environmental activist Vera Weber, on the other hand, supports the new climate protection law, “albeit half-heartedly, because there is a risk that nature will be put under even more pressure”.
However, it is quite possible that one day it will join forces with other nature conservation organizations to oppose the energy mantle decision. “We will decide on a referendum once the final bill has been passed,” says Weber. “If nature and landscape are destroyed, we have to take action.”
