In the interview, Papperger confirmed that Rheinmetall wanted to buy 36 Leopard 2 tanks from Switzerland. In addition, the German armament group bought Leopard 1 tanks in Italy. The Ruag itself stores such tanks there. Papperger said he did not know if the Leopard 1s purchased were Ruag’s. “I bought them from a company in Italy.”
The arms company Ruag is currently not allowed to sell its Leopard 1 tanks to Germany. Authorities had rejected Ruag’s application as part of a preliminary investigation, federal councilor Viola Amherd said during question time at the National Council on Monday.
