Now the SBB are creeping back. As they announced at a media conference on Monday, the SBB wants to adjust the tender in question. SBB CEO Vincent Ducrot (60) said he had heard the concerns of politicians and the public and taken them seriously. “Trust in SBB is very important to me.”

In the end, the group management decided to abandon the “optionally advertised customer segmentations such as age, gender or size”, as stated in a press release. In concrete terms, this means that the SBB wants to continue to rely on an extensive camera system, but to delete the most controversial point. The SBB has purchased a system that is fully compliant with data protection, the SBB claims. “However, for me there is not enough benefit for the core rail business,” said Ducrot.

The SBB will not only adjust the tender, but also make a data protection impact assessment for incoming offers, it said on Monday. The SBB will only decide on an offer after it has been checked by the Federal Data Protection Commissioner. The award is expected to take place in early 2024 – instead of June 2023 as previously planned. The new camera system would not be operational until early 2025 at the earliest. (she)
