Better art than consumption

Genevans vote on whether commercial billboard advertising should be banned in public places.

We all know. Those who stroll through cities are constantly reminded on billboards and screens of what one could or should consume. Also in the city of Geneva. Still. Because there the question arises: will Corinne Suter (28), Roger Federer (41) and Co. stop laughing at us from advertising posters in the future?

After six years of debate, Geneva voters will vote this weekend on whether advertising should be banned from public spaces. Cultural, sporting and educational posters would still be allowed. But commercial posters would disappear from public space.

Liberation from the compulsion to consume versus censorship

The “Zéro pub” (no advertising) initiative was launched by leftist and civic movements. They suffer from the excessive consumption in society. They see this as a liberation from the streets and want to ban all calls for excessive consumption in the future.

The opponents, ie the right and the economy, meanwhile shout “Zeter and murder!”. They find the initiative undemocratic because it entails censorship and prohibitions. They also complain that the city would lose about four million francs in revenue each year if the initiative were accepted.

The idea of an ad-free city of Geneva has been around since 2017. At that time, the advertising posters remained ad-free for three weeks. The reason: the contract with the outdoor advertising company had expired and a new contract had not yet been concluded. The townspeople quickly jumped into the breach and painted small works of art on the empty spaces.

Signal effect for the whole of Switzerland

The left-wing parties then thought that the city should remain advertising-free and launched an initiative that eventually found a majority in the city parliament. The referendum has been held against this, so the people will decide now.

The vote should have a signal effect for the whole of Switzerland. Because if the people of Geneva accept the initiative next Sunday, other cities can quickly follow. (Okay)
