Alain Berset loses public support

class=”sc-97fd9fa8-0 jNFKxv”>

Alain Berset is no longer the most popular member of the Federal Council.

The Interior Ministry indiscretions affair has apparently affected the popularity of the members of the Federal Council. According to a survey by Tamedia and “20 Minutes”, Viola Amherd is now the most popular federal council member. Alain Berset drops back to third.

In the survey published Monday, the Leewas Institute asked respondents to give federal councilors numbers between 1 and 6.

Defense Minister Amherd managed to increase her average satisfaction value from 4.02 to 4.22 compared to August last year and moved up two places. Treasury Secretary Karin Keller Sutter remains in second place with a value of 4.09. Berset’s happiness score dropped from 4.11 to 3.92. The Minister of Health, however, remained on stage.

According to the information, the SVP representatives Albert Rösti and Guy Parmelin are in fourth and fifth place. At the bottom are Ignazio Cassis and Elisabeth Baume-Schneider. Just a few weeks ago, the Jurassic landed one of the top spots in an “NZZ” rating.

When it came to whether Berset should be re-elected to the Federal Council after the fall elections, the SP magistrate came third behind Amherd and Keller Sutter. 49 percent of those polled support his re-election, in the case of Amherds and Keller-Sutters that is 58 and 54 percent respectively. The re-election of Secretary of State Ignazio Cassis received the least support with 33 percent.

Party political composition unclear

The research does not provide a clear picture of the future partisan composition of the state government. Only 19 percent prefer to stick to the current magic formula.

However, the study’s authors found that none of the alternatives was able to convince across all partisan political camps. While the voters of the SVP and the FDP would like to give the GLP a seat in the Bundesrat at the expense of the SP, the left-green camp prefers the variant with a Green seat at the expense of an FDP representation.

Despite the so-called corona leaks, 59 percent of those surveyed thought that the state government worked well together. 55 percent said they were satisfied with the work of the Federal Council as a whole. This is a 5 percent increase from the last survey in August 2022.

Views on the Federal Council were polled as part of the third election poll by Tamedia and “20 Minutes”. From February 15 to 17, 27,668 people from all over Switzerland took part in the study.

The Leewas Institute weighted the responses using demographic, geographic and political variables so that the results are representative of all eligible voters. The statistical error range is +/- 1 percentage point. (SDA/zis)
