More than 70,000 refugees from Ukraine sought protection in Switzerland last year. In addition, there were some 24,500 new asylum applications, which attacked the federal government and cantons. The cantons of Aargau and Lucerne have already declared a state of asylum emergency. The Windisch case also shows that the situation is problematic.

Exchange with cantons

The SEM tells the newspaper that it “recognizes the current tense situation in the individual cantons”. For example, the federal government is also prepared to introduce temporary allocation stops at the request of a canton. In that case, the affected cantons do not have to take in additional refugees from the federal government. The cantons of Geneva and Bern have already implemented this measure.

In the corresponding cases, the asylum seekers are accommodated for longer by the federal government. It has about 11,000 seats, of which about two-thirds are currently occupied. However, the federal government also keeps certain reserves ready in the event of a rapid increase in asylum applications. “We can’t just look for shelter when people are at our door,” said SEM spokesman Reto Kormann.
