Is it wise to give an interview as a victim when the scandal is already fading? Fin Canonica (57) says yes.

A month ago, journalist Anuschka Roshani (57) shook up the Zurich publishing house Tamedia in “Spiegel” with her accusations of sexism. In the eye of the hurricane was Canonica, Plaintiff’s ‘Magazine’ manager and supervisor until 2022, who accused him of bullying her. Yesterday he answered questions from Roger Schawinski (77). The conversation will be broadcast on Radio1 today at 11:00 am. SonntagsBlick has already heard.

Anyone expecting a classic “Schawinskiade” with continuous attacks will be disappointed. However, the interviewee drops his pants more than almost every talk guest before him: after the article “Mirror” he was plagued by “extreme feelings of shame”, he fell into a “depression”, did not dare to go out into the street anymore, had to taking medication and moving to a clinic, his family had suffered, the kids had stayed away from school.

The presenter shifts the conversation to family backgrounds, whereupon Canonica talks about the mother, a French Jew who survived the war. She had a drug and alcohol problem, there was no contact with her father, Canonica herself grew up as a “compulsory Catholic” in “precarious” circumstances in Zurich-Oerlikon.

After a meeting with Tamedia’s editor-in-chief in August, who covered him with anonymous accusations, he left the building and “puked in the Sihl”. If he, Canonica, made a mistake, it was in 2014 when he “might hit the wrong note”. But the structures are mainly to blame, or rather the group, which at the time set strict requirements for savings of more than a million. “I was under a lot of pressure.” And that a trade magazine reported in 2014 about a “climate of fear”? Well, he then emphasizes when asked about an “NZZ” article, but “the word power intoxication is foreign to me”.

He tells his accuser that this is also part of the defense strategy, he jovially emphasizes: “Anuschka has criticized the editors a lot, and I think that’s a good thing,” he says. He “chosen” her, not least with a paid sabbatical in London. And in 2007, he wanted to make her his deputy even though she was pregnant, but it “didn’t bother him at all”.

Schawinski was really attacked for the swastikas that Canonica used to draw in the manuscript for the Germanismen collaborators. “Of course you can’t, Finn”, reproaches the interviewer. It was an “extreme stupidity”, he admits.

The Rudin Cantieni report, which largely exonerates the ex-boss of the “magazine”, is mentioned several times. But sadly no evidence like the text where Canonica called Roshani a “pastor’s mistress” or praised her: “Although you are a woman, you have shone.” But he emphasizes again that he never said “fuck”, but “a lot of fuck and bullshit”. Canonica’s reasoning: “Maybe I listen to rap music too much.”

The conspiracy theory, quickly agreed upon by both interlocutors, is daring: behind the silence of the Tamedia people, none of whom stand by their names and defend Canonica, is the publisher Kein & Aber, led by the husband from Roshani. In addition, a German member of the Coninx family publishes with the same publisher, who is also on the board of directors of Tamedia. “A spider web has been laid over Kein & Aber’s ‘Magazine’,” Schawinski speculates.

It is quite possible that the case will soon be enriched with a legal chapter: he is investigating a lawsuit against the “Spiegel”, says Canonica. And emphasizes: “I don’t like to call myself a victim.”
