Canton is looking for a solution for tenants

Asylum must be built in this house in Windisch.

They will be out in three months. At Windisch AG, 49 tenants of a building have received notice of termination. Where they still live, asylum seekers will soon move in. The canton plans shelter for unaccompanied minors seeking asylum at the address.

The cancellations caused great indignation – also among the municipality, which was presented with a fait accompli by the owner and the canton. She appealed the decision to the government.

“wrong assumptions” have been made

Two days later, the Aargau government admits mistakes. The responsible government councilor Jean-Pierre Gallati (56, SVP) “deplores the developments initiated by the evaluation of the asylum reception for unaccompanied minor asylum seekers (UMA) in Windisch”, according to a press release from the canton.

Speaking to Blick, he says: “I apologize to those affected and to the Windisch city council for this mistake.” In assessing the suitability of the property, the cantonal social service did not pay attention to the consequences of the tenants’ terminations, according to the cantonal statement. This is because “wrong assumptions” have been made.

Social services assumed that the affected apartments were mainly studios with 30 days’ notice, Gallati explains. They did not know that it also involved larger apartments in which families live. “The cantonal social service has not given enough thought to this. That is not possible,’ says Gallati. “You should have thought about it from the start and talked to the tenants.”

The social service now wants to find a solution for the victims together with the municipality and the owner of the building. In principle, the landlord and the canton are prepared to let the tenants of the larger apartments live there longer. “We also support them in their search for a new apartment,” says Gallati. (lha)
