The Windisch case caused outrage: 49 tenants had to leave their apartment to make room for about 100 asylum seekers. The municipality of Aargau is now opposed to the canton’s plans. Criticism also comes from politics.
“This case is a scandal,” says SVP chairman Marco Chiesa (48) to Blick. And it is not an isolated case. “Swiss giving up their apartment to house asylum seekers is the worst decision you can make.” De Ticino sees this as “evidence of the asylum chaos that reigns in our country”.
Only, with Jean-Pierre Gallati (56), the government councilor responsible for the asylum system in the canton of Aargau is an SVP man. According to Chiesa, he can understand that the asylum situation causes problems for the cantons. “But it should not be the case that the Swiss are disadvantaged and end up on the street.”
He therefore has a clear request to his fellow party members: “In this case, Mr. Gallati must go through the books and ensure that the tenants can stay in their apartments.”
The SVP boss has another piece of advice ready for Gallati. “The cantons must stand on their hind legs and say clearly to the federal government: enough is enough!” says de Ticino. “Responsible for the intolerable conditions in the cantons is the failed asylum policy of the federal government – Justice Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider must now finally take action.”
According to Chiesa, the cantons and municipalities must now pay for what the federal government has done. “We have long warned about the abuses, so these cases are not surprising.”
The SVP has presented a position paper on this. “We must stop illegal asylum migration,” says Chiesa. “It cannot be the case that these people from half Africa and Asia come to Switzerland to live here at the expense of the working population.”
Due to the “asylum chaos” and the “excessive immigration”, housing became increasingly scarce and expensive. “That’s why we need to make sure that fewer people enter the country in the future.” The SVP wants to launch a new immigration initiative this year.
Political pressure is also growing in Aargau itself to cancel the planned asylum accommodation in Windisch AG. “Short-sighted and narrow-minded pseudo solutions are extremely dangerous,” the network association Aargau writes in a statement. The canton has no strategy on how to deal with the increasing number of asylum seekers. The canton had failed to set up temporary capacities that could be used quickly if necessary, the more left-wing association noted. The distribution of refugees over the communities has not proven itself in practice.
The GLP also points out that the Windisch canton “makes it too easy”. It takes revenge that the canton has not acted with foresight. The cantonal SVP demanded that “the exact facts be clarified and analysed”. She sees the situation as an example of “the asylum system has completely gotten out of hand” – even though her own government councilor Gallati in Aargau is responsible for asylum policy.
Three young Aargau parties have also jumped on the subject. The Young Liberals wrote about “state failure” and “misuse of state power”. The Young Socialists wrote that “there should be no asylum policy at the expense of the financially weak”. The Young SVP launched an online petition. The government council must stop the housing plans. The petition had about 3,000 supporters on Tuesday afternoon.
The cantonal department of Public Health and Social Affairs of SVP government councilor Gallati did not want to comment on the matter for the time being. It was a regular rental of two old properties, the renovation of which is imminent in the near future and not confiscation, it turns out Monday evening on request.
The cantonal social service (KSD) received a letter from the Windisch municipal council on Wednesday. The KSD will answer the letter in the coming days. The KSD does not want to “deal with the media” about the existing differences. After delivery of the letter to the Windisch municipal council, the KSD will also inform the public about its contents.
