Activist calls for more transparency in collecting signatures

Transparency arrangements in the political process are extended to the stage of collecting signatures in initiatives and referenda. “There is a risk of blackout here,” said Daniel Graf, co-founder of the Foundation for Direct Democracy. (archive image)

The reason for his demand is that parties and committees apparently use paid signature collectors. This is not new, said the co-initiator of the referendum against the E-ID in an interview with the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung”. “What is new is that there are companies that offer a total package.”

As a result, it is not always clear who collects how many signatures for how much money. “It is also not always clear who is behind a referendum,” says Graf. With budgets made public, it would be obvious who was working with paid collectors. “The cost difference is huge. There are now only a few parties that can do without paying collectors at all.”

If companies collect signatures instead of parties and organizations, respect for the latter diminishes. In addition, according to Graf, the working conditions in the companies concerned are often poor. “Anyone who collects signatures for wages and commissions probably has fewer qualms about cheating. There are known cases where signatures have been forged on a large scale.” (SDA)
