Patient safety is “a huge challenge” for Berset

Health Minister Alain Berset described patient safety as a “huge challenge” in Montreux VD on Friday.

Rapid solutions are needed to improve patient safety, Berset said. This requires the support and involvement of everyone from health professionals to health ministers and hospital directors.

In Switzerland, Berset founded the Federal Commission for the Quality of Care, a national mechanism dedicated to risk reduction.

According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), gaps in healthcare worldwide amount to several billion dollars a year. Nearly three million people die from insufficiently safe care in hospitals, the same number as on the road.

Always insured supplies

At the opening of the conference on Thursday, the director of the Federal Public Health Service (BAG), Anne Lévy, pointed to the WHO action plan from 2021 to 2030. The measures, which were approved two years ago by the 194 member states, should ensure that “every patient always receives safe care in all countries”.

The summit in Montreux, which was already scheduled for 2020, had been postponed due to the corona pandemic. A Montreux Charter will be adopted at the end of the fifth summit hosted by the WHO. (SDA)
