Cassis condemns the Russian offensive war

After the UN general debate in September, it was Cassis’s second appearance before the general assembly in a few months. (archive image)

In his speech in New York on Thursday, Cassis referred to the UN Charter’s ban on aggressive war. The goal of the United Nations is that the wars of the past do not repeat themselves, he said in New York on Thursday. The Russian aggression against Ukraine shows that the goal has not yet been reached.

“Ukrainians have the right to live in peace,” the foreign minister said. Switzerland strongly condemns human rights violations in Ukraine. He called on the international community to work towards a peaceful solution to the conflict. According to Cassis, a peace solution must be based on the principles of international law, namely the prohibition of violence and the territorial integrity of sovereign states.
