Climate Alliance loses majority in Zurich

The climate alliance loses its narrow majority in the Zurich cantonal council.

Despite losing the elections on February 12, the climate alliance consisting of SP, Greens, AL, EPP and GLP a narrow majority in the Zurich cantonal council. Till Thursday! Because when the elected cantonal councilor Isabel Garcia announced that she was from the GLP switched to FDP. And only eleven days after the elections!

Garcia justifies her change of sides with the fact that the financial and economic policy orientation of the GLP have “lately no longer corresponded sufficiently with my values in this regard”. Topics such as healthy state finances and a moderate tax burden are very important to her personally. “I feel better off with the FDP.”

The decision was only made after the elections

As a concrete example of where she does not share GLP’s opinion “at all”, she cites the initiative for corporate social responsibility in the “Tages-Anzeiger”. “I just can’t take responsibility for that.”

A party change a few days after the elections? One or the other voter may feel cheated. However, Garcia herself does not want to see a problem. After the elections, she did a location analysis and then came to this decision.

Ordinary people will often have the majority

This brings the climate alliance into the news legislator no longer to 91, but to 90 members. There is a stalemate in the cantonal council. In fact, the bourgeois parties should vote even are often in the majority. The reason for this is that the President of the Council is not allowed to vote, but only has the casting vote in the event of a stalemate.

As the current 1st Vice President Sylvie Matter (SP) at the first meeting of the new legislator be elected as the new president of the cantonal council. The climate alliance therefore misses your voice in the votes.

These would be the civil parties – if there are none on either side absences there – each with a majority of 90 to 89 votes. But Garcia also does not want to accept that the climate alliance has lost its narrow majority with her departure: “There are always some absentees.” She does not deny her green heart. “All parties are green on one subject or the other today.” (SDA/sf)
