Greens want to shut down the next nuclear power plant as early as 2027

The greens around alderman Delphine Klopfenstein Broggini want to close the existing nuclear power plants.

Then there were only four. Shortly before Christmas, on December 20, 2019 at 12:30 p.m., the Mühlenberg nuclear power plant was history. For the first time, a Swiss nuclear power plant was disconnected. Four others remain online.

If it is up to the Greens, these four systems should also be one closing date received. For Beznau I and II should be over in 2027. Into the nuclear power plants Gosgen and Leibstadt would have evaporated in 2032 and 2037 respectively if the “Tribune de Geneva” writes. Until now, the existing nuclear power plants are allowed to operate as long as they are considered safe. New construction is prohibited.

Proponents of nuclear energy on the rise

The timing is explosive. With the war in Ukraine, a power shortage is imminent, the whole of Europe has to save energy – so far Switzerland is lagging behind. Proponents of nuclear energy have recently been on the rise again. A popular initiative from SVP and FDP circles wanted to lift the construction ban on new nuclear power plants. Even the new energy minister, Albert Rösti (55), did not rule out support for nuclear power plants in principle.

Switzerland is dependent on electricity. If the nuclear power plants are gone, Switzerland will miss 24 terawatt hour Electricity. dolphins Klopfenstein Broggini (46) of the Greens is not afraid of that. “We can compensate for the disturbance with solar and wind energy or energy-saving measures,” she told the “Tribune de Geneva». The potential of solar systems on the roofs of buildings far exceeds the losses due to a lack of nuclear energy.

Almost no support for the Greens

The Greens should not hope too much for their political opponents. GLP chairman Jürg Grossen (53) does not believe in fixed shutdown dates, he told the “Tages-Anzeiger”. FDP chairman Thierry Burkart (47) also says: “We currently need all the electricity that is produced.” Shutting down the nuclear power plants would be a big mistake.

At least there is some support from the SP. Group leader Roger Nordmann (49) emphasizes the failure risk of the old reactors in the “Tages-Anzeiger”. “This sword of Damocles hanging over the energy supply could be eliminated with fixed phase-out dates.» (brother)
