Cantons should introduce a ban on face coverings

The competent committee of the Council of States wants to implement the new constitutional article at cantonal level.

The State Political Committee of the Council of States (SPK-S) has rejected the federal law on the ban on face coverings drafted by the Federal Council in the general vote. The parliamentary services announced this on Wednesday. The decision was extremely close – with a 5 to 5 vote with 3 abstentions and the casting vote of Chairman Mathias Zopfi (Greens/GL).

It is now up to the Council of States to discuss the bill in the spring session. In March 2021, the people and the cantons approved the popular initiative “Yes to the ban on face coverings”. Like the previously accepted minarets ban, it was launched by the Egerking commission led by SVP country councilor Walter Wobmann (65).
