The FDP in the canton of Solothurn sees their chance. Alderman Remo Ankli (49) gets back the seat in the Council of States that he lost twelve years ago. SP State Councilor Roberto Zanetti (67) will not stand as a candidate in the next elections.
The assembly of delegates on Wednesday evening sent Ankli into the race with applause. The theologian and historian has been a member of the government council and head of the Education and Culture Department since 2013.
Good chances for Ankli
Ankli would have good chances. He was elected with the best result in the elections for the government council in Solothurn. After being elected to the Council of States, he would resign as a member of the government.
Solothurn’s second incumbent Council of States, Pirmin Bischof (center), will run again in the fall elections. The 63-year-old politician has been a member of the Council of States since 2011.
FDP lost seat after 163 years
Bishop was immediately confirmed in office in the October 2019 election. The lawyer and civil-law notary recently became fathers for the third time.
In 2011, after 163 years, the FDP lost its seat in the Council of States to bishop on the second ballot. Since then, the FDP has unsuccessfully tried to regain the seat.
Roth and Imark also participate
In the SP, State Councilor Franziska Roth (56) is in the foreground as a candidate for the Council of States, in the SVP State Councilor Christian Imark (40). Solothurn’s SVP has never had a Council of States.
Zanetti announced last October that he would not seek re-election next fall. Zanetti has been a member of the Council of States since 2010. (SDA/tom)
