Juso calls for a global wealth tax

Juso boss Nicola Siegrist is campaigning for a global tax on the wealthy.

De Juso is campaigning for a global tax on the rich. Globally, the super-rich should be taxed in favor of the climate. Because it has been proven that the ecological footprint increases with increasing prosperity.

“The climate crisis is the most pressing problem of our time,” says Juso president Nicola Siegrist (26). “It directly threatens people’s livelihoods.” To prevent it from assuming the catastrophic proportions that can be expected from the current course, global warming must not exceed 1.5 degrees compared to the pre-industrial period.

Unfortunately, the efforts so far have not been enough. Juso sees “the current growth-driven and profit-oriented economic system” as the reason for this. Its dynamics keep emissions rising, although it has long been clear that a fundamental change is needed.

Winners have to pay

According to Siegrist, consistent climate protection should focus on the needs of all people. However, such protection threatens the profits of the super-rich, which is why they are trying to slow down the climate crisis, according to de Juso.

Fighting the climate crisis requires major financial resources. “But it is clear: it is not the general public that has to pay for it, but the beneficiaries of the climate crisis – the super-rich,” argues the Juso boss. “We need a global and effective tax on large assets,” explains Siegrist.

inheritance tax for the wealthy

Juso Switzerland has therefore submitted the demand to the Young European Socialists International. European states and the EU must work on super-wealth taxation. From the point of view of the young socialists, the revenue from these taxes should be used for consistent climate protection – in Europe itself or in the developing and emerging countries.

As a wealth tax in Switzerland, the Juso demand an inheritance tax of 50 percent for super wealth from 50 million francs.

Before the start of the World Economic Forum (WEF), the Juso want to reinforce their demands during a rally in Davos on Sunday afternoon. (pt)
