Roadblocks and clatter of sabers – the conflict in northern Kosovo has been in the news for weeks. Switzerland has already called on the two countries to relax. But not only the federal government has commented on the conflict. SP co-boss Cédric Wermuth (36) let his anger run wild on Twitter.
That is not surprising: the proximity of Wermuth to Kosovo and the Vetëvendosje party of Kosovar president Albin Kurti (47) is well known. Kurti Wermuth personally congratulated him on his co-chairmanship at the time.
Wermuth wrote on Twitter that one should not speak of a conflict between two parties. There are only Vucic, Putin and Serbian fascists who do not accept the self-determination of the Kosovar people.
Serbia demands an apology
The tweet provoked strong reactions online. He also fell into the wrong trap with the Serbian ambassador in Bern, Goran Bradic. In a letter available to the “Weltwoche”, he turns to Wermuth and demands at least an apology.
Bradic also finds other clear words: “apolitical”, “undiplomatic” and “unfriendly” is the proposition. Equating the Serbian people with “fascists” is outrageous, historically and politically incorrect and insulting.
Explanation is a sign of ignorance
Bradic accuses Wermuth of turning victims into perpetrators and executioners. Because in World War II, fascists murdered between 600,000 and 700,000 Serbs, Jews and Roma in concentration camps, the ambassador emphasizes. Almost the entire family of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic (52) was killed during that time. Wermuth’s statement was therefore a huge insult and a sign of his ignorance.
It is no coincidence that the letter is available to the “Weltwoche” of all places. The weekly has been repeatedly criticized for its uncritical attitude towards Putin and other autocratic systems.
situation remains tense
Wermuth is not alone in suspecting a connection between the Serbian saber-rattling and Putin’s offensive in Ukraine. SP co-chair Wermuth could not be reached for a statement when asked by Blick.
The situation between Kosovo and Serbia is tense. Serbia has never recognized the independent state of Kosovo, which used to be part of the country. Due to local elections in the north of Kosovo, the conflict has escalated sharply in recent weeks. In cooperation with the NATO security forces, 195 Swiss military personnel are also stationed in Kosovo. (Tom)
