Sanija Ameti receives “up to 100 hate mails a day”

Sanija Ameti is co-chairman of Operation Libero and a member of the Zurich Green Liberals party leadership.

Sanija Ameti (30) receives an average of ten to twenty hate mails a day, sometimes even ‘more than 100’. The Operation Libero co-leader and the member of the Green Liberals Zurich party leadership said to “20 minutes”.

The hate on the net has been lapping at her since her “first day in public,” Ameti continues. But she no longer wants to tolerate this harassment: she has decided to share the hate messages from her mailbox publicly – on Twitter and Instagram.

Ameti censors the names

Ameti writes about the news on Twitter: “It’s a part of Switzerland that most people don’t feel.” She hides the names of the senders of the hate mail. In the comments, Ameti justifies this by saying she doesn’t want to expose people – mostly men.

Rather, the aim of the publication is to provide insight into their daily lives. She wanted to address the fact that in Switzerland “the devaluation of women, especially women with a migrant background”, has a system. These are not isolated cases.

Also death threats in the mailbox

This is also evident from the four messages that Ameti posted on Twitter. Because she is demanding a new civil right with Operation Libero, she currently mainly receives news that she describes as a “paper Swiss”. She should be thankful, is the tone, and if she doesn’t like it in Switzerland, she should go back to her country of origin. Many of the senders are apparently men who describe themselves as “allies”.

This gratitude strategy perpetuates the power gap between women and men on the one hand and between Swiss and “paper Swiss” on the other, according to Ameti.

Even with death threats

The messages published by Ameti are apparently relatively innocent examples. Compared to “20 minutes,” she says she’s already received death threats — that could be criminally relevant. However, she lacks “the time and administrative talent” to pursue it, she says.

Ameti archives the messages under the hashtag #guteNachtliebeSchweiz. She gets a lot of encouragement on Twitter. The post has been liked more than a thousand times and retweeted 173 times. (bgs)
