“Well I Wouldn’t Do Everything”

SVP candidate for the Federal Council, Albert Rösti, would welcome any department if elected – even the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is in difficult negotiations with the EU. But he says, “Well, I wouldn’t do everything.” (archive image)

He stands for the principle of collegiality, Rösit said in an interview with the “Neue Zürcher Zeitung”, published on Saturday. But there are limits. “I couldn’t take responsibility for a template that would drive Switzerland into the EU.”

For him, the dynamic adoption of the law, the strong role of the European Court of Justice in the planned arbitral tribunal and the waiver of independent wage protection in Switzerland are non-negotiable with the EU. “I would certainly resist Switzerland from starting negotiations on a package that includes these three points,” Rösti said.

A resulting break in negotiations and the resulting economic problems are manageable for him. “The way the talks with the EU are going today, they are doomed to fail.”

Rösti also speaks out against deliveries of war material from Swiss production. Then Switzerland would “definitely become a war party”. He also criticizes the Federal Council’s handling of the sanctions against Russia: “With a more differentiated policy and better communication, the Federal Council could have achieved that Switzerland would be considered neutral without being on Russia’s side.” He described the neutrality initiative as “important”.

Rösti also has a clear opinion on gender – for him as a federal councilor that would not be a problem. “That’s how I respect my fellow man.” (SDA)
