Clap for the ex-post boss

The former middle national councilor and former postal boss Claude Béglé wants to return to the federal parliament.

The plans of former Vaud Central National Councilor Claude Béglé (72) collapsed like a house of cards. His goal: he wanted to return to the national political scene by switching parties in the FDP. But research by Blick shows that the Liberals have returned the admission request from the former chairman of the postal administration to the sender. A slap in the face of Béglé, who was a member of the National Council from 2015 to 2019.

That is a problem for Béglé, who was voted out of the federal parliament in 2019. Because even the Waadtländer Mitte party wants nothing more to do with him. In April 2021, he was expelled from the party board by the then canton chairman and current state councilor Valérie Dittli (30). There was a scandal in the party. Beglé resigned.

Béglé caused irritation

The chairman of Pully’s FDP section confirmed to Blick that his board had refused membership in the Béglé party. He declined to comment on the reasons for the cancellation. “The bylaws allow us to include anyone who wants to join us — or not,” he explains. However, these discussions are confidential and should remain so.

Research by Blick shows: the Vaudois FDP does not want defectors in its ranks. In addition, Béglé had made negative headlines in the past when, after a trip to North Korea, he praised the country under dictatorial rule in the highest pitch. Even later attempts at self-justification failed to allay the concerns.

No one believes in noble motives

The Vaudois FDP favors younger and especially female candidates. In addition, various party exponents have doubts about Béglé’s application for membership. “It’s hard to imagine him helping us set up the stands for Migros on Saturday morning outside the election period,” one mocked.

It is clear that Béglé only wanted to work for the FDP out of self-interest. So he wanted to create a return to the National Council on a strong list. No one in the party believes that he suddenly woke up one morning a convinced liberal.

And Beglé himself? Does he have a contingency plan up his sleeve? Does he have a third party in mind to make his plans come true? Despite several attempts, Béglé could not be reached. Everything indicates that after this FDP gossip, he will finally have to bury his political ambitions. (aj)
