Not all SVP voters are farmers

Not all SVP voters are farmers, said SVP Federal Council candidate Hans-Ueli Vogt to the “Tamedia” titles. Highly educated city dwellers also embodied the party: “I would like it if someone with this background were represented in the Bundesrat.” (archive image)

Although he is a city person, he also knows country life, the city of Zurich and professor of business law said in an interview published Tuesday. His father also worked on the farm. He describes himself as “not only crisis-resistant, but downright tough”.

He differs “in many respects” from his internal party competitor Albert Rösti, people should be able to develop freely. Vogt speaks out for same-sex marriage. When it comes to the revised sex criminal law, he favors a ‘no is no’ solution. The “yes is yes” approach leads to the criminal law requiring people to prove their innocence. When it came to cannabis legalization, he was “not open like he used to be”.

In addition, Vogt sees an increase in the retirement age, linked to life expectancy and AHV financing requirements, as necessary to safeguard the AHV. He rejects the transfer of Swiss war material, as Germany currently wants to do to the Ukraine.

If Vogt were elected on December 7, Switzerland would have an openly gay federal council for the first time. That would change “nothing directly” in Switzerland: “The sexual orientation of a Federal Councilor is private, it does not affect the country’s relationship with the EU or the security of the AHV,” says Vogt. “This message is important: you can become a gay member of the Federal Council in Switzerland – even in the SVP. I am of course happy with this case.” Switzerland is already far in terms of tolerance.
