FDP and SVP Zurich submit initiative against Tempo 30

The SVP and FDP Zurich submitted more than 7,000 signatures on Friday against a national speed limit of 30 km/h.

The SVP and the FDP of the canton of Zurich want the traffic in the streets of Zurich to move faster. The two parties submitted more than 7,000 signatures on Friday against a national speed limit of 30 km/h.

With the mobility initiative, there should still be exceptions for Tempo 30 for reasons of safety or quality of life. However, on all other roads, a speed limit of 30 km/h may no longer apply. FDP and SVP argued that speed reductions on major traffic routes slow down public transport, quality of service deteriorates and connections can no longer be guaranteed.

The so-called public transport initiative is mainly due to the efforts of the cities of Zurich and Winterthur, which want to introduce a speed limit of 30 km/h or have already done so.

Second initiative launched

At the same time, the parties are launching a similar initiative whereby the speed limit of 50 km/h should generally apply on major roads. The two initiatives complement each other, write the FDP and SVP in a joint statement.

If a maximum speed of 50 applies on the main traffic axes, the neighborhood streets will be relieved, according to the statement. The official name of the initiative is “Together ahead on main traffic routes – quiet in the neighbourhood”. The parties have six months to collect the required 6,000 signatures. According to the announcement, collection should begin in December. (lazy/SDA)
