Many words of praise were heard at the delegates’ meeting on Thursday evening. The cantonal SP co-chair spoke of a “reason for great joy”, even though everyone would probably regret the resignation of Federal Councilor Simonetta Sommaruga.
SP chairman Beat Jans said as one of the speakers that he had heard in recent days that Basel was fully behind Eva Herzog. More Basel is needed in the Bundesrat.
Herzog himself thanked the party for its longstanding support. It is time to bring more of Basel’s exemplary spirit of progressiveness, open borders and the social city to Bern.
On 26 November, the SP parliamentary group will make a final decision on the selection of the nominated candidates. The by-election for the two Federal Council seats that will become vacant is scheduled for December 7.
The 60-year-old former government councilor and state councilor of Basel, Herzog, announced her ambitions for the seat of government on November 10. Since then, she has been treated as a favorite in many media reports.
In addition to Herzog, the 58-year-old Jura State Councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, the 44-year-old Bernese Government Councilor and former National Councilor Evi Allemann and the 57-year-old Zurich State Councilor Daniel Jositsch are on the candidate carousel.
